As enterprises migrate to IP telephony, they often need to retain legacy analog devices for operational or budgetary reasons. Analog phones have been used in locations such as elevators/lifts for emergency use where installing Ethernet cabling to support IP phones may not be an immediate priority. In many businesses, even with the growth of integrated fax and e-mail solutions in unified massaging systems, traditional fax machines are retained since they already exist and staff are familiar with their operation. 3Com analog VoIP gateways can allow continued use of these analog devices by connecting them to the IP network. In addition, many smaller sites of a large enterprise will retain analog connections to the PSTN for supporting both local DDI/DID numbers and providing lowest local-call tariffs to the telecommunications service provider. In environments where remote branch sites are dependant on a single wide area IP network connection to the 3Com VCX IP Call Controller server, the local analog VoIP gateway also provides the important function of enabling incoming and outgoing calls to the PSTN - even in the event of a failure of the IP connection to the server site. This benefit is often referred to as remote site survivability. 3Com analog VoIP gateways offer a flexible choice of functions and configurations. When used with analog phones, the FXS version of the media gateway supports most of the VCX IP Telephony Module telephony features for IP phones, including message waiting indication via a stuttered dial tone. The FXO version of the media gateway can be used both for PSTN connections, and for integrating legacy analog PBXs as part of a migration plan.
